Soil Survey Complex Coordinate system: 4269 - "NAD83" Abstract: Revision Note: Please note that this dataset has been revised and is available from the Land Information Ontario (LIO) Warehouse. The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, in cooperation with the Ministry of Natural Resources, are compiling a high quality, detailed, geo-spatial soils database for Southern Ontario. This new database consolidates the existing digital soil data mapped on a county basis onto a digitally stitched and standardized product. Soil surveys were conducted on a county by county basis in agricultural Southern Ontario beginning in 1929 and continuing to the present day. The original survey data has been aligned to the Ontario digital base and adjacent surveys have been edgematched to remove gaps and overlaps. The data standard for soil surveys is aligned to be consistent with a national framework. The Detailed Soil Survey data for Ontario classified according to federal standard (CANSIS). Currently Soil Map Units are differentiated by province and soil survey. Over time, these will become more generatlized to provide a standard classification across surveys within the province. Some Soil Map Units use older OSIS classification but over time their soil types will be described via the more comprehensive CANSIS system.

  Purpose:

  The soils data will evolve to a digital database that is spatially accurate, seamless throughout Southern Ontario, current and easily accessible in digital and paper format. The database will contain other descriptive information including slope classes, Canada Land Inventory (CLI) rankings, stoniness, drainage class, texture etc. This, and other information as part of the Soils Ontario project can be applied to source water protection, land use planning, nutrient management and soil erosion planning. This system does not classify land for horticultural or other specialty type crops. The system evaluates three general qualities of mineral soils: 1. Productivity relative to all mineral soils in Ontario. 2. Flexibility, or the range of common field crops they are capable of producing. 3. Management needs with respect to necessary improvements and conservation practices for field crop production.   Supplemental Information:

  The current digital soils data was automated from soil survey reports and maps that were produced over a period of decades. The Soils Ontario project has brought these county surveys together in a digitally stitched database which reveals inconsistencies in soil data across county boundaries. These inconsistencies are a result of variations in scale and vintage of the original soil surveys. Using GIS and NRVIS (Natural Resource Values Information System) staff are updating soil information and correlating soil polygons that cross boundaries. Scientists from OMAFRA and AAFC are working towards automated tools for solving these correlation issues and updating soil information.

  The Ontario soil survey follows a taxonomy known as the Canadian System of Soil Classification (res.agr.ca/cansis/publications/index). The survey was completed on a county-by-county basis between 1929 and 2002 at a variety of map scales.

  The Canada Land Inventory (CLI) is also found within this data model. The CLI Soil Capability for Agriculture is a system for evaluating the effects of climate and soil characteristics on the limitations of land for growing common field crops (e.g. corn, soybeans, small grains, and perennial forages).
